"Finding A Writing Room was a gift to me from the universe. I am a new writer."

- Leslie, Writing Room Member

Embark on our week-long Digital Retreat, a special annual odyssey where both new and returning members come together and recommit to their craft.

There’s a great myth about writing — that it’s something you’re supposed to do alone, secluded in a cabin, crafting your magnum opus in isolation. But the truth is, no great writer has ever done it all on their own.

Every writer you’ve ever admired had mentors, trusted confidants, and a supportive community to guide and challenge them. Writing isn’t just about inspiration — it’s about systems, tools, and the right environment to bring out your best.

It’s time to write like real writers do. It’s time to surround yourself with the people and practices that make progress inevitable. Our Digital Retreat will jumpstart your potential and remind you of the power of your words.

"A Writing Room has me firmly rooted in living the life I've always dreamed of. It now feels so normal to be writing all the time, instead of worrying about all the writing I wasn't doing. I've finally come home."

How It Works: Guidance & Growth

A Week-Long Creative Accelerator — Break Through Resistance, Strengthen Your Voice, and Ignite Your Writing Passion

"A Writing Room was life-changing and deeply healing. It was one of those experiences that feels perfect and leaves you completely fulfilled. I feel grateful and lucky to have been a part of it."

—Effie, Writing Room Member

Whether you’re just starting out, or deep into your third draft, our Digital Retreat is your invitation to kickstart new momentum, dream bigger, and transform your ideas into publications.

Our Digital Retreat is the perfect time for existing members to reignite their passion and for newcomers to feel an immediate sense of belonging. You’ll explore all facets of our community, bond over shared challenges, and emerge feeling like a true part of A Writing Room.

An Immersive Experience with Working Professionals In Mind

While some writers have the luxury of fully immersing themselves in craft for the entire week, we know that many juggle jobs, families, and responsibilities. That’s why we’ve packed every day with opportunities to write, grow, and make real progress — whether you decide to dive in all day, or just catch key moments. All sessions (except Silent Writing) will be recorded, so if you're unable to catch a session live, the replays will be available.

Habit: If You’re Not Writing, Nothing Gets Written

Habit is the foundation of every great writer’s journey. Inspiration may come and go, but a consistent writing practice is what turns ideas into masterpieces. By building a strong habit, we honor our creative gifts, stay sharp, and maintain momentum—ensuring that writing isn’t just something we do occasionally, but a lifelong, sustainable practice. The more we show up, the more we grow, and the more we make writing a natural, engaging part of our everyday lives.

Craft: The Art of Making Your Story Engaging and Irresistible

Craft is what transforms raw ideas into compelling, unforgettable stories. It’s the difference between a story that lingers in a reader’s mind and one that fades away. By refining our skills—mastering structure, voice, pacing, and depth—we ensure that every page we write captivates, moves, and resonates. Great storytelling isn’t just about having something to say; it’s about saying it in a way that keeps readers turning the pages.

Completion: Pushing Past Perfectionism and Procrastination

A story isn’t truly a story until it’s finished. Completion is about pushing past perfectionism, self-doubt, and procrastination so your work sees the light of day. Too many brilliant ideas get lost in endless revisions, or abandoned before they reach their full potential. But real progress happens when we commit to finishing—whether it’s a first draft, a final edit, or pressing ‘send’ on a submission.

Community: The Secret Ingredient That Turns Practice Into an Adventure

Writing may seem like a solitary act, but true growth happens in community. It’s here that we gain insights, skills, and inspiration we could never find on our own. More than that, community transforms the grind of practice into something alive—an experience that pulls you in, excites you, and makes you want to show up day after day. At A Writing Room, you don’t just write—you belong to something bigger, a fellowship that makes the journey worth waking up for.

Anne Lamott

Teacher | Activist | Truth Teller

The beloved author of ten New York Times bestselling books, California Hall of Fame Inductee, and Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, Anne Lamott is a living literary legend.

Anne partnered with A Writing Room at our very first retreat in 2022, and shortly after became a full-time artist in residence at A Writing Room. She brings her passion, humor, and skill as a writer — and human — to this year's cohort, as well as a little “benevolent pressure.” Through her guidance, you will learn how to stop not writing and officially be able to call Anne a mentor who is in your corner.

Maggie Smith

Poet | Essayist | Teacher

Maggie Smith is the author of seven award-winning books, including Dear Writer: Pep Talks & Practical Advice for the Creative Life, You Could Make This Place Beautiful, Lamp of the Body, The Well Speaks of Its Own Poison, and Good Bones, named by the Washington Post as one of the Five Best Poetry Books of 2017. Her most recent poetry collection, A Suit or a Suitcase, is forthcoming from Washington Square Press in 2026. The title poem of Good Bones was called the “Official Poem of 2016” by Public Radio International and has been translated into nearly a dozen languages. We're thrilled to welcome her to A Writing Room as a teacher and mentor.

Jake Morrissey

Editor | Teacher | Publishing Legend

If you love to read, you’ve almost certainly loved a book that Jake Morrissey helped bring into the world. From Calvin and Hobbes to The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store to Bird by Bird, Morrissey’s taste has largely defined the modern bookshelf, and he has a deep love for making a writer’s work shine, even if his own influence is invisible. Jake is an editor at Penguin and one of Writing Room’s industry experts where he offers his unique insight gained through an editor’s lens.

Kelly Fremon Craig

Screenwriter | Director | Producer

Kelly Fremon Craig is a screenwriter, director, and producer known for her poignant and witty coming-of-age stories. She studied English before launching her film career, and her breakout came with The Edge of Seventeen (2016), which she wrote and directed to critical acclaim. In 2023, she adapted and directed Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, earning the rare approval of author Judy Blume for her thoughtful and heartfelt interpretation. We’re thrilled to invite her to A Writing Room to lead a brand new session, Characters & Conflict.

Digital Retreat is for any writer who is looking to recommit to their writing, or to finish one dedicated piece of work in a week-long accelerator.
YES! This entire week-long retreat is included in your membership, every year.
No, you are welcome to simply join the sessions that are most interesting to you, or that fit into your schedule. Replays will be available for all sessions (except Silent Writing and Study Hall).

However, we encourage you to attend sessions live whenever you can  — nothing beats the energy of gathering in real time with other writers.

$399 = Retreat only: Access to all 7 days + replays (buy now)

$499 = Retreat + membership: Access to all 7 days + replays + one year of membership (buy now)

You'll have ample opportunities to connect with other attendees, including on Silent Writing "After Parties," inside the Chat Salon, in the chat during all sessions, and by celebrating together at Victory Lap (the last day of the retreat).
Digital Retreat will be a completely online program so that members from around the world can join.

However on May 19th, we will have 40 seats available in our San Francisco headquarters for those who would like to join Maggie Smith and Anne Lamott's Monday workshops. In-person seats are 50% off for all members, email support@awritingroom.com to claim your coupon code.
We do not offer refunds for any reason, either for one-time tickets or memberships. However you can always cancel your Writing Room membership before the next annual billing cycle.

Signing up for a year-long writing program can feel like a huge step, but after decades of working with writers, we've found an annual commitment consistently produces the best results, both in your daily writing habit and publication goals.

By committing to a year, you remove the decision of whether or not to focus on your writing, and instead say a resounding "YES" to making your idea a reality. And if life surprises you with an extra busy month (or two), you'll still have several months left to get back on track.

Signing up for the annual program also means you won’t have to deal with monthly renewals that make you question your commitment, distracting you from your writing goals. You can focus on what truly matters — your craft.

Review our full policy at awritingroom.com/terms/

Sign up for Digital Retreat by purchasing an annual membership to A Writing Room (here), then RSVP to each Digital Retreat event in "Event Gatherings."

Or you can sign up for just the retreat here, and you'll receive the emails with links to each event.

$399 = Retreat only: Access to all 7 days + replays (buy now)
$499 = Retreat + membership: Access to all seven days + replays + one year of membership (buy now)

Replays will be available within 24 hours for all sessions except Silent Writing and Study Hall.
